Using Topic Modeling to Assess Middle School Science Discourse based on Next Generation Science Standards

چکیده
In this paper we apply natural language understanding and topic modeling methods to create an instructional tool for assessing science discourse in interactive multimedia presentations that are created, shared and discussed by students. The resulting assessment prototype will enable teachers to follow student discourse in real time, to understand gaps in student learning, and to improve teaching practices. Middle School Life Sciences and Physical Sciences standards from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) serve as a basis for assessing domain relevance. Domain knowledge and standards are modeled, and student discussions are analyzed and graphed.

Effective science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education can be better supported by teaching tools that promote critical thinking and modalities that situate learning in the context of real-world problems. This is emphasized in the next generation science standards (NGSS) for high school engineering, where students are expected to engage with the global issues at the interfac...
متن کاملDevelopment of Two-Dimensional Classroom Discourse Analysis Tool (CDAT): scientific reasoning and dialog patterns in the secondary science classes
Background: In a science classroom, students do not simply learn scientific ways of doing, knowing, and reasoning unless they find ways of appropriating scientific discourse. In the Next Generation Science Standards, major forms of scientific discourse are emphasized as a main part of the Science and Engineering Practices. To enhance student engagement in scientific discourse, teachers need to ...
